Practice for the New York commercial driver’s license knowledge tests. The questions follow the federal CDL manual that every state builds its tests on, and every answer is explained.
New York CDL basics
- A commercial learner permit issued on or after December 27, 2022 is valid for 365 days.
- You cannot schedule the road test within 14 days of the permit issue date.
- The written CDL tests are offered in English, Spanish, Chinese and Russian. The hazmat test is English only.
- First-time applicants finish entry-level driver training before the road test.

What you can practice
- General knowledge
Required for every CDL. Inspection, vehicle control, hazards, cargo and the rules.
- Air brakes
Compressor, tanks, warnings and the brake checks. Needed to drive any air-braked vehicle.
- Combination vehicles
Coupling, uncoupling, rollovers and trailer skids. Needed for Class A.
