Michigan CDL basics
- CDL knowledge tests are taken in written form at a computer testing station, and the hazardous materials test must be taken at a Secretary of State office.
- You need a score of at least 80 percent to pass a CDL knowledge test.
- You can take only one test per day in each testing category, and you wait one day to retake a failed test.
- After you get a commercial learner permit, you practice under a CDL holder for at least 14 days before the skills test.
- Drivers aged 18 to 21 can operate a commercial vehicle only inside Michigan. You must be 21 to drive between states or haul placarded hazardous materials.
Michigan can add its own rules on top of the federal manual. Check the official site for Michigan Secretary of State before your test. DMVZone is not affiliated with any state agency.
