Utah motorcycle rules test
12 questions on Utah's own motorcycle rules: licensing, permits, helmets and course waivers. Included with motorcycle Premium.
Utah motorcycle rules to know
Taken from Utah Driver License Division. Rules change, so confirm with the agency before you go.
- To get a Utah motorcycle endorsement you must be at least 16 and hold a Class D driver license.
- Utah requires riders under 21 to wear a helmet.
- The written knowledge test is closed book with 25 questions, and there is also a rider skills test.
- Completing an approved rider course waives the rider skills test, and you must show your completion card to the Driver License Division within six months.
- During the first two months on a permit you cannot carry passengers or ride between 10 pm and 6 am, with exceptions such as travel to or from home or work.
- Permit riders in the first two months also cannot ride on highways posted above 60 mph, and riders under 19 must hold the permit at least two months unless they finished the MSF Basic Rider Course.
Try a sample question
Here is how a question looks, with its explanation.
Braking
You need to stop quickly on dry pavement. What is the best way to brake?
The front brake does most of the stopping, because weight shifts forward as you slow. Squeeze it smoothly and add the rear brake. Grabbing the front hard can lock the wheel, and using only the rear gives a longer stop.
Common questions
Are the motorcycle practice tests free?
Some are. Basic controls, braking, protective gear and the quick practice test are free and need no sign-up. The other topic tests, the full exam simulator and your state's rules test are part of motorcycle Premium, a one-time payment with no subscription.
Are these the real test questions?
No. They are original DMVZone practice questions about safe riding: braking, curves, lane position, gear, traffic, hazards, passengers and impairment. They are not copied from any state test, and every answer is explained.
Do the questions change by state?
The questions cover safe riding that applies everywhere. Rules that differ by state, such as helmet laws, permit ages and rider-course waivers, are on each state page with a link to the official source. Read your state's motorcycle manual too.
Is a motorcycle knowledge test different from the car test?
Yes. It covers riding topics such as braking, curves, lane position, gear and visibility. Many states also require a riding skills test or an approved rider course, so check with your licensing agency.
