Hawaii CDL Skills Test: County Schedules and Test Day Rules - Air brake fail ends test illustration

It is 7:45 a.m. and you are standing next to a truck you have driven in practice for weeks. Today is the CDL skills test, and in Hawaii there is one detail that changes everything: the counties run it. Honolulu, Hawaii County and the other counties each set their own days and booking rules, so the Hawaii CDL skills test you take depends on where you live. Here is what the county pages say.

How is the Hawaii CDL skills test scheduled?

In Honolulu, the Department of Customer Services CDL office runs skills tests at 8 a.m., 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., Monday through Friday. You book in person only. After you book and pay, rescheduling is not allowed, so choose a slot you can actually keep.

In Hawaii County, tests run in South Hilo Monday through Friday, but in Kona only on Tuesday and Wednesday. If you live on the Kona side, plan your week around those two days.

What happens in each part of the Hawaii County practical test?

Hawaii County's practical test has three parts. One fee covers all three, but if you fail a part you must make a new payment to try again. The time limit depends on the vehicle: a Class B or lower test is limited to 1.5 hours, and a Class A test to two hours.

Why does the air brake check matter so much?

The air brake check is the part of the pre-trip that many students rush. In Hawaii County, failing it ends the whole test, so a nervous mistake costs you the day and a new payment. Practice the sequence aloud until you can say it in order without notes, and do it on the truck you will test in.

Do your test-day pre-trip once on your own the evening before. Then arrive early enough to repeat it once without rushing.

How should you prepare the week before a Hawaii CDL test?

Other counties may set their own schedules, so if you live outside Honolulu or Hawaii County, ask your local office before you plan a trip.

What do you need before booking a Hawaii CDL test?

What if your CDL expires in Hawaii?

Hawaii CDL renewal has to be done in person. There is a 90-day grace period before late fees apply, and if a CDL is expired more than a year you must start over with the written and road tests. Service members deployed overseas at expiration get up to 90 days after returning to renew without penalty.

Who runs the Hawaii CDL skills test?

County licensing offices do. Honolulu and Hawaii County have different schedules and rules, so check the county where you live.

What times does Honolulu give CDL skills tests?

At 8 a.m., 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., Monday through Friday, booked in person only.

Can I reschedule a Hawaii CDL skills test?

In Honolulu, rescheduling after booking and payment is not allowed.

What fails you immediately on the Hawaii County CDL test?

Failing the air brake check is an automatic failure, and the test ends there.

How soon can I book a Hawaii CDL skills test after my permit?

An appointment can be made 14 days after the permit is issued and paid for.

Counties can change days, times and booking rules. Confirm details with your county licensing office, such as Honolulu's Department of Customer Services or Hawaii County Vehicle Registration and Licensing, before you go.

Rules and fees change. Always confirm the details with the official Hawaii DMV or motor vehicle agency before you act. DMVZone practice questions are written to teach the rules and are not copies of the real test.
