How many questions is the Ohio motorcycle permit test? The Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) does not list a question count or pass mark for the motorcycle knowledge test on its motorcycle page or in its Motorcycle Operator Manual. What the BMV does publish is useful: adults with a valid Ohio driver license can take the test online, you wait 24 hours after a fail, and there is no limit on attempts. Here is the full picture and how to study.

How many questions is the Ohio motorcycle permit test?

We checked the BMV's motorcycle license page, the Ohio Driver Manual and the Motorcycle Operator Manual (MOP 0001, a supplement to the Digest of Ohio Motor Vehicle Laws). None gives the number of questions or the passing score for the motorcycle test. The manual says knowledge test questions are based on its contents and shows sample questions. We will not repeat unofficial numbers, so confirm with the BMV if you want the exact count.

Do not assume it matches the car test. The Ohio BMV written test for a car permit is 40 multiple-choice questions with a 75% pass rate, according to the Ohio Driver Manual, but that is a different exam on a different book.

Online or at an exam station

Adults who already hold a valid Ohio driver license may complete the motorcycle knowledge test online. Everyone else, including teens, takes it with a vision screening at a BMV driver exam station. After you pass, buy your motorcycle TIPIC at a deputy registrar license agency within 60 days, or you will have to take the test again.

What the manual will test you on

  • Following distance: the Ohio manual says to keep a minimum of two seconds behind the vehicle ahead, and three or more on slippery pavement, in heavy traffic or when you cannot see through the vehicle ahead.
  • Protective gear: a windshield is not a substitute for a face shield or goggles, and tinted eye protection should not be used in low light.
  • Helmets: all first-year endorsed operators and their passengers must wear a helmet.
  • Lane position, braking, curves, intersections and road hazards.
  • Alcohol and Ohio law, carrying passengers and group riding.
Good to know

Ohio's motorcycle manual uses a two-second minimum, while some other states teach four. Learn the number in the Ohio book, because that is the one the test uses.

Rules on a motorcycle TIPIC

  • Carry the TIPIC whenever you ride.
  • Ride in daylight only.
  • No passengers.
  • No interstates or congested roads.
  • Wear a helmet and protective eyewear.

From TIPIC to endorsement

Adults can take the off-street skills test at a driver exam station, bringing a valid TIPIC and wearing a helmet and eyewear. The Motorcycle Operator Manual says there is no fee for that test. Fail any part and you wait one week to retest. Another route is a Motorcycle Ohio course: the completion card waives skills testing for 60 days from the date it is issued. Riders under 18 must complete the Motorcycle Ohio Basic Course and meet graduated licensing rules. You are treated as a novice for one year after you get the license or endorsement.

The BMV fee table lists a motorcycle-only license at $27.50 for four years. Check the current table for the cost of adding an endorsement to an existing license.
