How many questions is the Georgia motorcycle permit test? The Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS) does not publish a question count for the motorcycle knowledge exam. Its testing page describes the standard knowledge exam as two 20-question tests, road rules and road signs, with 15 correct needed on each, and its motorcycle manual says Class M applicants take a special road signs test and a special road rules test. Confirm the motorcycle format with DDS, then study the Georgia Motorcycle Operators Manual as a whole.

How many questions is the Georgia motorcycle permit test?

Here is what DDS does and does not say. Its Test and Exams page states that the knowledge exam has a Road Rules test and a Road Signs test, both requiring at least 15 out of 20 to pass. Section 1 of the DDS Motorcycle Operators Manual says Class M license tests include a special road signs test, a special road rules test and a riding test, and that knowledge questions are based on the manual. Neither page gives a separate count or pass mark for the motorcycle version, so we will not state one. Ask your Customer Service Center if you want the exact format before test day.

Georgia permit test vs the motorcycle permit test

People often search for the Georgia permit test or the DDS permit test when they mean the motorcycle one. They are different exams. The car permit test covers general road rules and signs. The motorcycle exam is built on the Georgia Motorcycle Operators Manual, so expect questions on lane position, braking, protective gear, carrying passengers and riding in groups. If you already passed the car test, you still take the motorcycle knowledge exam.

Who can take it and what to bring

  • You must be at least 16.
  • Under 18: meet Joshua's Law by bringing a certificate of completion for a driver education course from a DDS-certified driver training school.
  • Under 18: bring a parent, guardian, responsible adult or authorized driver training instructor to sign the License/ID/Permit Form.
  • Submit the License/ID/Permit Form online before your visit.
  • Bring one identity document and two Georgia residency documents. All documents must be in English.
  • Bring the $10 permit fee.

Test day tips

  • No appointment is needed for a knowledge exam, but DDS says you must be on the computer no later than 30 minutes before the Customer Service Center closes.
  • If you fail, wait one day to retest. After a second failure, wait seven days.
  • DDS says all retests require an appointment and payment of the permit fee, by cash or card only.
  • Customers with reading disabilities can ask for an oral test at a Customer Service Center, though schedules vary by location.
Good to know

Do not plan to squeeze the exam in at the end of a workday. Get there early, and leave time for a vision check and paperwork.

Rules once you have the Class MP permit

  • Daylight riding only.
  • No passengers.
  • No limited-access roadways.
  • Safety equipment as required by law, including a DOT-approved helmet. Eye protection is required in Georgia.

The permit lasts six months and can be renewed only once. Your motorcycle knowledge exam score is good for one year. If you do not pass the riding skills test within that year, you retake the knowledge exam.

From permit to Class M

You can take the Motorcycle Riders Skills Test at a DDS Customer Service Center, or complete a Georgia Motorcycle Safety Program course. Finishing an approved course earns a 90-day License Test Waiver that exempts you from both the written and skills tests, so bring it to DDS within that window.

How many questions is the Georgia motorcycle permit test?

DDS does not publish a count for the motorcycle knowledge exam. Its standard knowledge exam is two 20-question tests with 15 correct needed on each, and the motorcycle manual says Class M applicants take special road signs and road rules tests. Confirm with DDS.

Is the DDS permit test the same for cars and motorcycles?

No. The motorcycle knowledge exam is based on the Georgia Motorcycle Operators Manual. Passing the car test does not replace it.

How old do you have to be for a Georgia motorcycle permit?

At least 16. Riders under 18 must meet Joshua's Law and bring an adult to sign.

How much is the Georgia motorcycle permit?

DDS lists the permit fee as $10.

What if I fail the Georgia motorcycle permit test?

Wait one day to retest, and seven days after a second failure. Retests need an appointment and the permit fee.

Rules and fees change. Always confirm the details with the official Georgia DMV or motor vehicle agency before you act. DMVZone practice questions are written to teach the rules and are not copies of the real test.
