The Service Oklahoma written test is the permit knowledge test that is now run by Service Oklahoma (oklahoma.gov/service) instead of the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety, and you can take it at home online as well as in person. It has 20 questions, you need 15 correct, and the online version is in English only, according to Service Oklahoma's written test page as of October 14, 2026.

Service Oklahoma does not post a dated change notice for the test on the pages we checked, so we have not given a start date. Below is how the test works now compared with the old DPS process.

Who it affects, and who it does not

  • Teens: you can take the written test online from age 14, or 13 and a half if you live or work on a farm, with a parent or guardian present for the identity check. You still get the permit at 15 with driver education or 16 without.
  • Teens in an approved driver education course: completion can waive the written test.
  • Adults getting a first license: you can test online or in person, then visit a location for the permit and vision test.
  • Anyone with a suspended license in any state cannot use the online test.
  • Not changed: the questions still come from the Oklahoma Driver Manual.

What to do now

  1. Decide online or in person. Online needs a desktop or laptop with a front camera and microphone. Phones are not supported.
  2. Register through the Written Knowledge Test page on oklahoma.gov/service and read the rules shown at sign-up.
  3. Take the test alone in a quiet room. Under 18, your parent or guardian handles only the identity step.
  4. After you pass, go to a Service Oklahoma or Licensed Operator location for the vision test and your permit.
  5. Bring your ID, Social Security number, proof of lawful presence and residency (two proofs for REAL ID), a parent or guardian if under 18, and $42.50 plus $4 for each failed attempt.

How to prepare

With 20 questions and 15 needed, you can miss only 5. Read the Oklahoma Driver Manual in short sessions and make a one-page sheet of every number: ages, practice hours, permit driving times and distances. Learn road signs by shape and color, then take practice tests and write down what you miss. Because you get only two online attempts, wait until your practice scores are steady before you start the real test.
