How many questions are on the Oklahoma permit test?

Service Oklahoma says the written exam has 20 questions and you must answer 15 correctly to pass. That means you can miss 5 questions. You get 60 minutes, which is plenty, so read every answer choice before you pick one.

With only 20 questions, each miss costs 5 points. Two careless mistakes on road signs and you are already near the line, so practice until you are scoring 19 or 20 out of 20.

What's on the Oklahoma permit test

The questions cover Oklahoma traffic laws, road signs and safe driving, taken from the Oklahoma Driver Manual. Service Oklahoma also has a free study hub with a practice test.

  • Road signs and signals, by shape, color and meaning.
  • Right of way, turning, passing and speed limits.
  • Alcohol, drugs and their penalties.
  • Sharing the road with school buses, motorcycles and large trucks.

What makes Oklahoma different

Two changes catch people out. First, the agency: driver licensing moved from the Department of Public Safety to Service Oklahoma, so older guides that say "DPS" are out of date. Second, the language: Service Oklahoma says the written test is currently only available in English. If English is not your first language, practice reading test-style questions in English before test day.

How to study for the Oklahoma permit test

  1. Read the Oklahoma Driver Manual in short sessions, one chapter at a time.
  2. Learn road signs first, by shape and color.
  3. Write down every number in the manual on a single sheet.
  4. Take Oklahoma permit test practice quizzes and explain each wrong answer out loud.
  5. Book the test when you are scoring at least 18 of 20 every time.

What to bring and how to book

You visit a Service Oklahoma licensing office for the vision test and to get your learner permit. Service Oklahoma asks for:

  • One proof of identification.
  • One proof of lawful presence.
  • One proof of address (two if you want a REAL ID).
  • Your Social Security number. You do not need the physical card.
  • If you are under 18, a parent or legal guardian, or a notarized Parent Authorization Form.
  • If you are 15, your driver education enrollment contract or completion certificate.
  • $42.50 for the permit, plus $4 for each failed written attempt.
Good to know

Completing an approved driver education course may waive the written test, but Parent-Taught Driver Education does not qualify.

Can you take the Oklahoma permit test online?

Yes. Service Oklahoma lets you take the written exam online if you are at least 14, or 13 and a half if you live or work on a farm, and you do not have a suspended license. You need a webcam and microphone, and for minors a parent or guardian must be present to verify your identity before the test starts. There is no extra fee for testing online, but you only get two online attempts. After that, further attempts are in person.

What happens if you fail

Service Oklahoma says the written exam can be taken as many times as needed, and it does not publish a waiting period. Each failed attempt adds a $4 fee to your account, which you pay when your permit is issued. Online, you get two tries before you must test in person.

After you pass

  • Drive only between 5 a.m. and 10 p.m.
  • A licensed driver who is at least 21 must be with you.
  • Behind-the-wheel training in driver education cannot start until you hold the permit, and you must carry it during training.
