After the online application, the DMV lists several things you handle at the office. If you were issued a license in another jurisdiction in the last 10 years, you submit form DL 939, the 10 Year History Record Check. You also submit the Medical Examination Report (MCSA 5875) and the Medical Examiner's Certificate (MCSA 5876), prove your identity, show residency documents if you have never had a California license or ID, and have your thumbprint and photo taken.

You get three attempts at each knowledge test. If you fail the same test three times, you must reapply. The application itself is valid for 12 months, so if you have not met all CDL requirements in that time, you start over.

How long is a California CLP valid?

A California CLP is valid for 180 days. It can be renewed for another 180 days if the new expiration date is no more than one year from the initial application date. While you hold it, you must be accompanied by a CDL holder with the right class and endorsements. A CLP can carry only the N, P and S endorsements, with limits: a tank must be empty and purged if it held hazmat, and with a P or S endorsement you cannot carry passengers other than approved personnel.

What are the California CDL training rules?

ELDT is required for an original Class A or B CDL, a Class B to A upgrade, and S, P or H endorsements. Your training provider must be on the federal Training Provider Registry. Theory has no minimum hours, but you must score at least 80 percent. Behind-the-wheel training must total at least 15 hours, 10 of them on a public road, and simulators cannot count toward it.
