Alabama CDL Requirements: A Checklist Before You Visit ALEA

Alabama CDL Requirements: A Checklist Before You Visit ALEA - 360-day CLP illustration

Before you drive to an Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) office, run through this list. Alabama CDL requirements come down to six pieces: documents, medical paperwork, entry-level training, a permit, a skills test and a clean driving record. Missing one can send you home without finishing, so it pays to check each box first.

What are the Alabama CDL requirements for documents?

ALEA tells CDL applicants to bring a short stack of paperwork. Put these in a folder the night before:

Hazmat applicants have extra steps, covered below. If you are applying to a trucking company, there is also paperwork on the employer side.

Do you need training before an Alabama CDL?

Yes, if this is your first CDL. ALEA says Entry Level Driver Training (ELDT) is required for anyone getting a CDL for the first time in Alabama. Under the federal rules behind ELDT, the training has to come from a provider listed on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry, so check the registry before you pay anyone.

Ask your school how and when it records your completion, and keep your own copy of the certificate. Getting that settled early means one less thing standing between you and your test date.

How long is an Alabama commercial learner's permit valid?

The Alabama CLP is valid for 360 days and it cannot be renewed. If it runs out, you have to retake the written tests to get a new one. That makes the permit a clock, not a formality: plan your practice miles and your training schedule before you take the knowledge tests, not after.

Write your CLP issue date on the calendar and count 360 days forward. Then book your skills test well before that last week.

What medical paperwork does ALEA need?

Every Class A, B or C CDL holder must self-certify the type of driving they do. You only need to submit the form again if the type of transportation you perform changes, for example when you move from hauling inside Alabama to crossing state lines.

If you self-certify as Non-Excepted Interstate, you need a DOT medical card, and it has to reach ALEA electronically from an examiner certified by FMCSA. ALEA warns that missing or inaccurate information prevents issuance. In practice that means you should ask the examiner to confirm the submission instead of assuming the paper in your hand is enough.

Keep an eye on the follow-up too. If ALEA does not receive your required medical information within 45 days of its notice, your CDL privileges are removed.

How does the Alabama CDL skills test work?

ALEA schedules skills tests by appointment only, so you cannot show up and wait. The test has the usual three parts: the vehicle inspection, basic control skills and the road test. You bring a vehicle that matches the class you want.

Service members who drove equivalent vehicles in a military unit during the past 12 months may qualify for a skills test waiver. Ask ALEA what proof it expects.

What extra steps apply to hazmat and job applications?

Re-examination also comes into play if an Alabama CDL has been expired for more than three years, so a long gap between jobs is worth planning around. Keep your renewal date in a place you will actually see it.

What are the Alabama CDL requirements for a first-time applicant?

You need a current driver license, your Social Security card, two proofs of residence, proof of insurance, required ELDT, your self-certification and medical information, then a CLP and a passed skills test.

How long is an Alabama CLP good for?

It is valid for 360 days and cannot be renewed. After it expires you must retake the written tests to get a new one.

How long must I hold the CLP before the skills test?

At least 14 days. ALEA schedules the test by appointment only.

Do I need ELDT to get a CDL in Alabama?

ALEA says ELDT is required for anyone getting a CDL for the first time. The training must come from a provider on the federal Training Provider Registry.

Does Alabama need a medical card for my CDL?

If you self-certify as Non-Excepted Interstate, yes. The DOT medical card must reach ALEA electronically from an FMCSA-certified examiner.

Requirements and procedures can change, so confirm each item with ALEA's Driver License Division before you go. DMVZone is a study resource and is not affiliated with ALEA.

Rules and fees change. Always confirm the details with the official Alabama DMV or motor vehicle agency before you act. DMVZone practice questions are written to teach the rules and are not copies of the real test.
