Braking

You need to stop quickly on dry pavement. What is the best way to brake?

  • The front brake does most of the stopping, because weight shifts forward as you slow. Squeeze it smoothly and add the rear brake. Grabbing the front hard can lock the wheel, and using only the rear gives a longer stop.

Common questions

Are the motorcycle practice tests free?

Yes. Every motorcycle test is free right now and needs no sign-up, including the exam simulator. Create an account if you want your scores saved.

Are these the real test questions?

No. They are original DMVZone practice questions about safe riding: braking, curves, lane position, gear, traffic, hazards, passengers and impairment. They are not copied from any state test, and every answer is explained.

Do the questions change by state?

The questions cover safe riding that applies everywhere. Rules that differ by state, such as helmet laws, permit ages and rider-course waivers, are on each state page with a link to the official source. Read your state's motorcycle manual too.

Is a motorcycle knowledge test different from the car test?

Yes. It covers riding topics such as braking, curves, lane position, gear and visibility. Many states also require a riding skills test or an approved rider course, so check with your licensing agency.

Rules such as helmets and permit ages differ by state. Pick your state with “Start free motorcycle practice” on the motorcycle home page to see yours. DMVZone is not affiliated with any state agency.
