How much space must a Florida driver give when passing a bicycle?

How far must you stay from a bicycle when passing it in the same travel lane in Florida?
The answer
You must pass at a safe distance of not less than 3 feet. If you cannot do that safely, stay behind until you can pass with at least 3 feet of room and clear the bicycle.
The rule also applies to nonmotorized vehicles and electric bicycles. When the bicycle is in a bicycle lane, you must keep at least 3 feet between your vehicle and the bicycle.
General Florida passing rules also require you to signal, pass on the left at a safe distance, and not return to the lane until safely clear.
Exceptions
- The 3-foot rules in the same-lane and bicycle-lane subsections do not apply when the bicycle occupies a separated bicycle lane.
Penalty
Violation is a noncriminal traffic infraction, punishable as a moving violation under chapter 318. The statute page does not list fine amounts.
Why this rule matters for safety
A cyclist can wobble or hit a bump and drift sideways. Three feet leaves room to avoid a collision.
