The Nebraska permit test is the Class O written test: 25 questions, and you need 80% to pass, so you can miss 5. It is given by the Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) at its driver licensing offices, and the same test is used whether you are applying for a school learner's permit at 14 or a regular learner's permit at 15.

How many questions are on the Nebraska permit test?

The Nebraska permit test has 25 questions. The DMV examiner's manual lists the Class O written test as 25 questions and says you can miss 5, because every written test needs a score of at least 80%. A passed test stays valid for six months.

Missing 5 can feel like plenty, but adults who already drive often lose points on book facts like fines and alcohol rules. Aim for 23 or better on practice tests.

What's on the Nebraska permit test

Questions come from the Nebraska Driver's Manual, which the DMV publishes in English and Spanish, plus an audio version. Expect:

  • Road signs, signals and pavement markings.
  • Right of way at intersections, including uncontrolled rural ones.
  • Speed, following distance, passing and lane changes.
  • Sharing the road with farm equipment, trucks, bicycles and pedestrians.
  • Alcohol, drugs and the penalties for impaired driving.
  • Rules for permit holders, such as who may supervise you.

What makes Nebraska different: permits starting at 14

Nebraska has more teen permit types than most states, and the names confuse a lot of families:

PermitMinimum ageKey points
LPE (School Learner's Permit)14Vision and written tests. Valid six months. Lets you practice toward a school permit
SCP (School Permit)14 years 2 months to under 16 years 3 monthsMust have held an LPE or LPD for 2 months. Written and drive tests are waived with a DMV-approved driver safety course
LPD (Learner's Permit)15 (apply up to 60 days before)Vision and written tests. Valid one year

With any of these permits you must drive with a licensed driver who is at least 21 in the seat beside you. If you already hold a valid LPE, SCP or LPD, or one that expired within the last year, the written test is waived for the next permit.

How to study for the Nebraska permit test

  1. Download the Nebraska Driver's Manual from dmv.nebraska.gov and read one chapter a day.
  2. Learn road signs by shape and color, then by meaning.
  3. Write every number you find (distances, ages, limits) on one page.
  4. Take the DMV's own practice exam and DMVZone practice tests. Write down each question you miss.
  5. Keep going until you score 23 or more out of 25 several times in a row.

What to bring and how to book

For an LPE or LPD, the DMV asks for:

  • Proof of U.S. citizenship or lawful status showing your name, date of birth and identity.
  • Two documents showing your Nebraska principal address.
  • Your Social Security number, verified with the Social Security Administration, or proof of exemption.
  • $13.00 for the original permit.
  • Glasses or contacts if you need them for the vision test.

Find office locations and hours at dmv.nebraska.gov/locations, and check the DMV's document verification page for the full list before you go.

Can you take the Nebraska permit test online?

No. The DMV gives the written test in person at its driver licensing offices. The only online permit service it lists is for students who finished an approved driver safety course and are moving up to a school permit or provisional permit.

What happens if you fail the Nebraska permit test?

You cannot retake a failed test the same day. The DMV examiner's manual sets these waits:

  • Tests 1 to 3: wait one day between tests.
  • Test 4: wait 7 days.
  • After failing a 6th time: complete an approved driver training course or wait 90 days.

Use the wait to study the topics you missed instead of just retaking practice tests from memory.
