No. If you are wondering "can I take my permit test online in PA," PennDOT, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, gives the learner's permit knowledge test in person at its Driver License Centers, not online at home. You can do a lot of the work online, including studying the manual, taking PennDOT's practice test and booking your road test later, but the real 18-question test happens at a center.

There is one small exception: a remote testing pilot at two high schools in Tioga County. For everyone else in Pennsylvania, plan on an in-person visit. Here is what that looks like and how to be ready for it.

Can I take my permit test online in PA?

Not at home. PennDOT's online driver's manual (pa.gov/dmv) says the knowledge test is given at all Driver License Centers across the commonwealth, and its "Get a Learner's Permit" page lists the test as a step you complete at a center. The only online test PennDOT points to is a sample practice test and its practice test app, which do not count toward your permit.

If you see a site offering a "PennDOT permit test online," it is a practice test. That is useful for studying, but you still need to pass the real test in person.

The school pilot in Tioga County

In November 2025, PennDOT and the Northern Tioga School District launched a two-year Remote Learner's Permit Knowledge Testing Pilot at Williamson High School and Cowanesque Valley High School. PennDOT-approved teachers give the test at school on remote testing software. Students who pass still take their results, application, documents and fee to a Driver License Center to get the permit. PennDOT says it will review the pilot before deciding whether to offer it to other districts.

What you can do online

  • Read the Pennsylvania Driver's Manual on pa.gov/dmv.
  • Take PennDOT's sample knowledge test or use its practice test app.
  • Download the Non-Commercial Learner's Permit Application (DL-180) and the parent consent form (DL-180TD).
  • Look up center locations and hours.
  • Schedule your road test online once you are eligible.

How to get your permit in person, step by step

  1. Fill out the DL-180. Your health care provider completes the physical on the back, dated no earlier than six months before your 16th birthday.
  2. If you are under 18, have a parent or guardian complete the DL-180TD. If they cannot come, they sign it in front of a notary.
  3. Gather original proof of date of birth and identity, and your signed Social Security card. If you are 18 or older, add two proofs of residency.
  4. Go to a Driver License Center with your forms, documents and the fee. Do not mail the DL-180.
  5. Take the vision screening if your provider did not, then the 18-question knowledge test.
  6. Pass, and you leave with your learner's permit.
Good to know

Bring your glasses or contacts. If your vision was not checked by your health care provider, it is tested at the center before the knowledge test.

Why practicing online still matters

Pennsylvania has one of the shortest permit tests in the country: 18 questions, and you must answer 15 correctly. A fourth wrong answer is a fail. That makes online practice the best use of your time before the visit. Take full practice tests, write down every miss, and reread that part of the manual.

A good target is 17 or 18 out of 18 on several practice tests in a row before you go to the center. If you do fail, PennDOT lets you retake the test the following business day, but a second trip is time you could spend driving with your permit.

After you pass

Your learner's permit is valid for one year. If you are under 18, PennDOT requires at least 65 hours of supervised driving, including 10 at night and 5 in bad weather, and you must hold the permit for six months before the road test. Start your log the day you pass.

Can I take my permit test online in PA?

No. PennDOT gives the knowledge test in person at its Driver License Centers. Online, you can study, take PennDOT's practice test and download the forms.

Is there a PennDOT permit test online?

Only as a practice test. PennDOT's sample test and app are for study. The only remote testing is a school pilot at two Tioga County high schools, where teachers give the test at school.

Is the PA permit test online the same as the real one?

No. Practice tests, including DMVZone's, use original questions based on the Pennsylvania Driver's Manual. They help you prepare, but they do not count toward your permit.

Do I need an appointment for the PA permit test?

PennDOT requires appointments for the road test. For the knowledge test, check your Driver License Center's details on pa.gov before you go.

How many questions are on the PA permit test?

18 multiple-choice questions. You need 15 correct to pass.

Rules and fees change. Always confirm the details with the official Pennsylvania DMV or motor vehicle agency before you act. DMVZone practice questions are written to teach the rules and are not copies of the real test.
