The Kentucky permit test is a written knowledge test, and you need a score of at least 80% to pass. Driver licensing in Kentucky is run by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC), while the Kentucky State Police (KSP) give the written and vision tests, so your permit visit involves both. Neither agency publishes how many questions are on the test. Practice sites often say 40, but that number is unofficial, so study every topic in the Kentucky Driver Manual.

How many questions are on the Kentucky permit test?

The official sources do not give a number. The Kentucky Driver Manual says only that "applicants must make a minimum score of 80% to pass this test." If the test has 40 questions, as practice sites claim, 80% means 32 correct, so you could miss no more than eight. Treat that as an estimate, not a promise.

The manual also says you must answer the road signs portion from your own knowledge, even if you use an audio or interpreted version of the rest of the test. Since the number you can miss is not published, aim to get every practice question right.

What's on the Kentucky permit test

KSP calls the Kentucky Driver Manual the only approved study material for the test. Questions cover driving rules, regulations, procedures and highway signs. These are the numbers and rules that catch people most often:

Road signs have their own part of the Kentucky test, and you must answer it from your own knowledge.
  • Following distance: keep at least 4 seconds behind the vehicle ahead.
  • Speed limits when nothing is posted: 65 mph on interstates and parkways, 55 mph on other state highways, and 35 mph in business or residential districts.
  • School and church buses: stop for a stopped bus from either direction. The only exception is opposing traffic on a road with four or more lanes divided by a barrier or median.
  • Alcohol: 0.08 for adult drivers and 0.02 for drivers under 21.
  • Seat belts: Kentucky has a primary seat belt law, so you can be stopped just for not wearing one.
  • Bicycles: leave at least 3 feet when passing a bicycle.
  • Permit holders under 18 may not drive from midnight to 6 a.m. without good cause.

What changed in Kentucky

Older advice tells you to go to the circuit court clerk in your county. That is out of date. KYTC has moved driver licensing from the county clerks to its own Regional Driver Licensing Offices, and KSP runs the knowledge testing. Check drive.ky.gov for the nearest regional office before you go.

Good to know

Kentucky teaches a 4-second following distance. Many other states teach 3 seconds, so if you studied another state's book, update your notes.

How to study for the Kentucky permit test

  1. Download the free Kentucky Driver Manual from KSP or drive.ky.gov and read one section a day.
  2. Learn road signs by shape and color first, then by meaning, since you must answer them without help.
  3. Highlight every number: distances, ages, hours, speed limits and alcohol limits. Put them on one page.
  4. Take Kentucky permit test practice quizzes and write down every question you miss.
  5. Retest your weak topics until you score well above 80%, then sleep well the night before.

What to bring and how to book

Book your written and vision test through the KSP online scheduler, linked from the KSP driver testing page. On test day, KYTC says to go to a Regional Driver Licensing Office first with your documents, take the tests with KSP, and then return to the regional office for your permit. A parent or guardian must come with a teen to the appointment.

For a ky permit test, what to bring under 18, according to KYTC:

  • Original birth certificate or a certified copy. Photocopies are not accepted.
  • Social Security card.
  • One proof of Kentucky residency, or two for a REAL ID.
  • The TC 94-200 High School Compliance Verification Form from your school.
  • A parent or legal guardian to sign the application. A guardian needs court papers.
  • The fee: $15, or $18 for REAL ID.

Applicants 18 and older need the birth certificate, Social Security card and one proof of residency dated within the past year (two for REAL ID). Rules change, so check the ID Document Guide on drive.ky.gov before you go.

Can you take the Kentucky permit test online?

No. You can schedule online, but the written test is taken in person with KSP. Some locations have an audio version, and you can request an oral test by calling KSP at (800) 542-5990, option 3.

What happens if you fail the Kentucky permit test?

KYTC says that if you fail the written test, you may come back the next available day to retake it. Neither agency publishes a limit on attempts. Before you leave, ask whether you need a new appointment, then spend that time on the sections you missed.

After you pass

  • Teens get a paper permit to use until the card arrives by mail.
  • A licensed driver 21 or older must sit in the front passenger seat whenever you drive.
  • Under 21, hold the permit at least 180 days before the road test. At 21 and older the wait is 30 days.
  • Teens need a signed log of 60 practice hours, including 10 at night.
  • Under 18, you may carry only one unrelated passenger under 20.
