What Happens If You Fail Your Permit Test in PA?

What happens if you fail your permit test in PA: when you can retake it, how many questions you can miss, what to bring back and how to pass the next time.

A red car and a blue car approach a residential intersection with no signs or signals from two different directions.

If you fail your permit test in PA, you can retake it the following business day. The Pennsylvania Driver's Manual from PennDOT says so directly, and PennDOT's teen guide adds that you may take the knowledge test only once on any day, at any location. Keep your forms, because you must bring them back when you retest. PennDOT does not publish a limit on how many times you can take the knowledge test.

What happens if you fail your permit test in PA?

QuestionPennDOT's answer
When can I retake it?The following business day
How many tests per day? One, regardless of test location
Do I need my forms again?Yes. Keep them and bring them back
Is there an attempt limit?PennDOT does not list one
Does my paperwork expire? The DL-180 application is valid for one year from your physical exam date

Failing does not cancel your application. You go back with the same DL-180, the same DL-180TD parent consent form if you are under 18, and the same documents, and you take the test again.

Good to know

Fail on a Friday and the next business day is usually Monday. One test per day means a second attempt the same afternoon at a different center is not allowed.

How many questions can you miss on the PA permit test?

Three. The Pennsylvania Driver's Manual says the knowledge test has 18 multiple-choice questions and you must answer 15 correctly to pass. A fourth wrong answer is a fail. That margin is small: one weak topic can cost you three or four questions.

The test measures your knowledge of traffic signs, Pennsylvania driving laws and safe driving practices. It is offered in written and audio formats in about 30 languages at Driver License Centers, on request.

Do you pay again to retake it?

PennDOT's teen guide lists the permit fees, $45.50 for a Class C permit, but no separate charge for each knowledge test attempt. We could not find an official PennDOT page that says outright whether a retake costs extra, so ask at the Driver License Center before you leave.

What to bring to the retake

  • Your completed DL-180 Non-Commercial Learner's Permit Application, with the health care provider section filled in.
  • If you are under 18, the DL-180TD Parent or Guardian Consent Form.
  • Original proof of date of birth and identity. Photocopies are not accepted.
  • Your signed Social Security card.
  • Glasses or contacts if you wear them.

Watch the date on your physical. The DL-180 is valid for one year from the physical exam date, so if you have put off your retake for months, check that your application has not run out.

Testing at school? The Tioga County pilot

PennDOT launched a two-year remote knowledge testing pilot in November 2025 at Williamson and Cowanesque Valley high schools in Tioga County. PennDOT says a student who fails there can retake the test at school on another day, without a trip to a Driver License Center. Everyone else tests at a center.

How to pass on the next business day, or the one after

  1. Write down every topic you remember struggling with as soon as you leave.
  2. Reread only those chapters of the Pennsylvania Driver's Manual.
  3. Drill road signs by shape and color, then by meaning.
  4. Take practice tests until you score 17 or 18 out of 18 several times in a row.
  5. Only then go back. Next business day is the earliest you can retest, not a deadline.
