Yes, you can get a free PA permit test questions and answers PDF right here: 30 original practice questions with a full answer key, plus a one-page table of the numbers people forget. There is no email form. Click, print and study. The questions are written by our instructors from the Pennsylvania Driver's Manual published by PennDOT. They are not the real test questions, and anyone who promises you the real ones is not telling the truth.
What is in the free PDF
- A numbers table on page one: following distance, signal distances, parking distances, alcohol limits and the practice log.
- 30 multiple-choice questions on signs, signals, right of way, speed, parking and alcohol.
- An answer key with a one-line reason for every answer, so you learn the rule and not just the letter.
- Plain black and white pages that print well on any home printer.
Every answer was checked against the current PennDOT Driver's Manual on pa.gov. If PennDOT changes a rule, the manual wins over any practice sheet, ours included.

The numbers on the Pennsylvania test
Most people who fail the PA permit test know the general ideas and miss the numbers. These all come from the PennDOT Driver's Manual:
| Rule | Number |
|---|---|
| Following distance, dry road | 4 seconds (5 to 6 seconds on wet roads) |
| Signal before turning | 100 feet under 35 mph, 300 feet at 35 mph or more |
| Low beams | Within 500 feet of oncoming traffic, 300 feet when following |
| School zone with flashing lights | 15 mph |
| School bus with red lights flashing | Stop at least 10 feet away |
| Maximum speed limit | 70 mph |
| Behind an emergency vehicle | At least 500 feet |
| No parking near a fire hydrant | 15 feet |
| No parking near a crosswalk at an intersection | 20 feet |
| No parking near a stop or yield sign | 30 feet |
| No parking near a railroad crossing | 50 feet from the nearest rail |
| Distance from curb when parked | No more than 12 inches |
| Alcohol limit | 0.08 at 21 and older, 0.02 under 21 |
Turn the table into flash cards: rule on the front, number on the back. Ten minutes a day for a week beats one long night.
How to use it as a PA permit test study guide
- Read the Pennsylvania Driver's Manual one chapter at a time. Chapter 2 (signs and signals) and Chapter 3 (learning to drive) carry most of the numbers.
- Take the PDF cold, with no notes, and write your answers in the margin.
- Grade it with the answer key. For every miss, find the rule in the manual and read the whole paragraph around it.
- The next day, take DMVZone's free Pennsylvania practice test online for fresh questions.
- Retake the PDF two days later. When you score 28 or better twice in a row, you are ready to visit a Driver License Center.
Why we do not sell real test answers
PennDOT does not publish its test bank, and the questions you see at the center are drawn from the manual. Sites that sell real PA permit test answers are guessing at best. Learning the rules works better anyway: you will need them on the road test and every day after it.
PennDOT also has its own free practice resources, including the Test Your Knowledge questions at the end of each manual chapter on pa.gov. Use them alongside our PDF.
On test day
- Bring the completed Non-Commercial Learner's Permit Application (DL-180), including the physical on the back.
- If you are under 18, bring the parent or guardian consent form (DL-180TD).
- Bring original proof of identity and your Social Security card. Photocopies are not accepted.
- If you fail, the manual says you can retake the test the following business day. Use the gap to study what you missed.
