How many questions are on the Oregon permit test?

The Oregon Driver Manual says the Class C knowledge test has 35 multiple-choice questions, and you must answer 28 correctly to pass. That means you can miss 7 questions.

Seven misses sounds generous, but the questions cover the whole manual. Students who skip the road sign and right-of-way sections tend to use up their seven fast.

What's on the Oregon permit test

The test comes from the Oregon Driver Manual and covers rules of the road, road signs and safe driving practices. Expect questions on:

  • Road signs, signals and pavement markings.
  • Right of way, turns, lane use and passing.
  • Speed rules, including Oregon's basic speed rule.
  • Sharing the road with pedestrians, bicyclists and large vehicles.
  • Alcohol, drugs and phone use. Permit holders may not use a mobile device while driving, even with a hands-free accessory.

What makes Oregon different: DMV2U online testing

Oregon DMV offers the Class C knowledge test online through DMV2U, its online services site, at any time of day. You need a desktop or laptop with a keyboard, mouse and webcam. Phones and tablets cannot be used. The fee is the same online or in person.

How to study for the Oregon permit test

  1. Read the 2026-2027 Oregon Driver Manual a chapter at a time.
  2. Take Oregon DMV's free practice test to learn the question style.
  3. Learn road signs by shape and color first.
  4. Take Oregon permit test practice quizzes and keep a list of every question you miss.
  5. Book your test when you are scoring well above 28 of 35 every time.

What to bring and how to book

Drivers aged 15, 16 and 17 get a provisional instruction permit. Whether you test online or at the office, you finish at a DMV office, where you:

  • Show proof of identity and your physical address (more documents if you want a REAL ID).
  • Give your Social Security number, or an electronic certification that you do not have one.
  • Bring your parent or legal guardian to sign.
  • Pass a vision test and have your photo taken.
  • Pay the issuance fee. Oregon DMV lists the current amount on its Driver Licensing & ID Card Fees page.

You can book an appointment through DMV2U or use standby service at a DMV office. Every time you test, you pay the test fee and show proof of identity and date of birth.

Can you take the Oregon permit test online?

Yes. Oregon DMV offers the Class C knowledge test online through DMV2U. If you are under 18, a proctor must supervise: someone 21 or older with a Social Security number who has not proctored more than five DMV tests in the past 12 months. Testers 18 and older do not need a proctor. You can test online twice in any 24-hour period and four times in total, after which you test at a DMV office.

What happens if you fail

At a DMV office you may test again the same day, depending on how busy the testing area is. Online, you get two tries in 24 hours and four in total. You pay the $7 fee every time. Oregon DMV warns that anyone caught cheating cannot test again for 90 days.

After you pass

  • Drive only with a licensed driver who is at least 21 and sits beside you.
  • For practice hours to count, your supervising driver must have held a license for at least three years.
  • No mobile phone use while driving, including hands-free.
  • The permit is valid for two years from the date it is issued.
