Four cars at an intersection with a stop sign on each approach, with white stop lines painted on the pavement in front of the cars.

Yes. You can take the Colorado DMV written test at home with the @Home Driving Knowledge Test from the Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles (dmv.colorado.gov), any time and anywhere, on a desktop or laptop with a front-facing camera. When the DMV launched it in July 2022, it said any Coloradan old enough to test for an instruction permit could use it, so it is open to adults as well as teens. You still visit a driver license office afterward to get the permit.

Here is who qualifies, how the test works, what it cost at launch and what to bring to your appointment.

Can you take the Colorado DMV written test online?

Yes. The DMV's @Home Driving Knowledge Tests page says aspiring drivers can test for their instruction permit online, any time, anywhere, using any desktop or laptop computer with a front-facing camera. The DMV also says the written test is required for all ages, so adults who have never held a license take it too, either @Home or in an office.

At launch, the DMV said applicants under 19 needed a proxy aged 19 or older, who receives the test results and notifications. The @Home page lists current eligibility rules in its FAQ, so read it before you register.

How the Colorado DMV written test at home works

  1. Pre-register online with the Colorado DMV.
  2. Start the @Home test from dmv.colorado.gov on a desktop or laptop with a front-facing camera.
  3. Take the test in English or Spanish. The questions can be read aloud if you have speakers.
  4. Pass, then schedule an appointment at a state driver license office.
  5. Bring proof that you passed, on paper or on your phone, along with your documents.

The DMV says the @Home application uses active cursor and video monitoring to protect the results. Treat it like an office test: sit alone, keep your phone and the handbook out of the room, and do not leave the test window.

Good to know

Do a two-minute check before you start: camera on, face well lit, every other program closed. Most online test problems happen before the first question.

Prepare before you click start

The Colorado DMV does not publish how many questions are on the written test or the passing score. Study the whole Colorado Driver Handbook, then take practice tests until you score close to 100%. The handbook's numbers, such as signal distances and school bus stopping rules, are where most people lose points.
