Yes. The West Virginia DMV lets you take the driver's license knowledge test, the test for a learner's permit, online through its Online Services Portal, so the WV permit test online is a real option. If you are under 18, an adult over 18 must take part in registration, and you still visit a DMV regional office afterward to get the permit.
Can you take the West Virginia permit test online?
Yes. The West Virginia DMV (dmv.wv.gov) offers the West Virginia permit test online to people it can verify. Here is who qualifies, based on the DMV's online test guidance and its graduated licensing page:
- Age: the Level 1 instruction permit is for teens at least 15 and under 18. Adults who have never been licensed also take the knowledge test.
- Identity: you enter your name, address, date of birth and the last five digits of your Social Security number. If they do not match the DMV's records, you must test in person.
- Under 18: an adult over 18 must take part in registration. A parent or legal guardian is preferred but not required. The adult gives their name, date of birth, last five Social Security digits and a valid driver's license number.
- Parent signature: for a Level 1 permit, a parent or legal guardian must still sign your application at the DMV.

West Virginia permit test online cost
The DMV's graduated licensing page lists the Level 1 knowledge test fee as $7.50 per attempt. The online test guidance does not repeat the amount, so check the price shown before you pay. The DMV does not refund fees for a failure due to knowledge or fraud.
Questions and time limit
The West Virginia DMV does not publish the number of questions, the passing score or a time limit for the online test on the pages we checked. Practice sites list their own numbers, but those are unofficial, so study the full handbook.
Rules that get people failed
The DMV's What You Should Know page spells out the rules for the online test:
- You cannot navigate away from the test screen.
- Keep your cursor inside the red box on the screen at all times.
- No other person should appear on the webcam while you test. The adult who helped register must stay out of view.
- You get two warnings for leaving the test screen. After two warnings the program stops the test and you fail.
From our years with new drivers, the most common slip is clicking outside the test window by accident, often to close a pop-up or check a message. Close every other program and turn off notifications before you start.
If you fail
If you fail because of wrong answers, you must wait seven days before you retest. You get a certificate that links to the study guide, so use the week to work on the topics you missed.

What to do after you pass
Take your certificate of completion to a DMV regional office. The DMV recommends making an appointment. Bring:
- Your certificate of completion.
- Your identification and residency documents.
- A parent or legal guardian to sign if you are under 18. Married applicants under 18 bring a certified marriage certificate instead.
The DMV validates your test, takes your license photo and issues the permit. Its online test guidance says a passing score is valid for six months, but an earlier DMV announcement said 30 days, so go soon and do not let it lapse. To move to Level 2, you must hold the Level 1 permit for six months.
