Yes, if you are under 18. The AZ permit test at home, which Arizona MVD calls Permit Test @ Home, is offered only to teens under 18, with a parent or legal guardian supervising through their own AZ MVD Now account. Adults 18 and older take the permit test in an MVD office.
Can you take the Arizona permit test online?
Yes, for teens. The Arizona Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Division (azdot.gov/mvd) sets these rules for Permit Test @ Home:
- Age: the at-home test is only for teens under 18. You must be at least 15 years and 6 months old to apply for an instruction permit.
- Supervisor: a parent or legal guardian supervises the test. A participating Arizona Professional Driving School can also give the test.
- Account: the parent or guardian needs a free AZ MVD Now account. MVD says teen accounts cannot be used for taking the test.
- Adults: MVD describes the at-home option only for teens. If you are 18 or older, plan to test at an MVD office, where no appointment is needed.
How the AZ permit test at home works
The MVD permit test at home runs through the parent's AZ MVD Now account, not a webcam proctoring company. These are the steps MVD lists:
- Study firstRead the Arizona Driver License Manual and take MVD's online practice tests and other practice tests.
- Parent signs inThe parent or guardian logs in to or creates an AZ MVD Now account and verifies their identity.
- Add the teenThe parent completes the teen's information.
- Pay the feePay the $7 application fee. MVD said when it launched the program that this is the same fee charged in an office.
- Take the testThe teen answers 30 multiple-choice questions while the parent supervises. You need 80 percent, which is 24 correct.
Device, webcam and time limit
Arizona MVD does not list webcam or device requirements, or a time limit, for the at-home test. Instead of camera monitoring, the parent is the proctor and must certify that they will proctor the exam fairly.
How many questions are on the Arizona permit test online?
30 multiple-choice questions, the same as the office test. You need a score of 80 percent or higher to pass.
Rules that get people failed
Arizona MVD does not publish a list of banned behavior for the at-home test. What it does require is supervision by a parent or guardian who certifies they will proctor fairly. Treat it like the office test:
- No phone, notes or driver manual open while testing.
- The parent watches but does not help, hint or read answers.
- Use the parent's AZ MVD Now account. Teen accounts cannot be used.
- Take it in one sitting in a quiet room.
From our time teaching new drivers, a parent who helps on the test is not doing the teen any favors. The road test and real traffic do not come with hints, so let the score show what still needs work.
Retakes
When ADOT launched the program, it said teens get three attempts to pass within 12 months. The current MVD page does not repeat that limit, so check AZ MVD Now if you need another try.

What to do after you pass
The test is only the first step. To get the instruction permit:
- Schedule an MVD office appointment through the teen's AZ MVD Now account, or visit an Authorized Third Party Driver License Provider.
- Bring a completed application and all original supporting documents.
- Bring the parent or guardian to sign. If they cannot come, MVD requires a signed, notarized application.
- Take the vision test and have your photo taken.
The instruction permit is valid for 12 months. You must hold it for 6 months, or until you turn 18, before you can get a driver license.
