Ohio temps testing locations are any Ohio BMV driver exam station, select deputy registrar license agencies, and your own computer, since the knowledge test is also offered online. The Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) points everyone to one official tool to find an office: the Local Office finder from the Ohio Department of Public Safety at publicsafety.ohio.gov. Use that list rather than third-party directories, because hours and services change.
Ohio temps testing locations: your three options
| Where | Knowledge test? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Driver exam station (DX) | Yes, at any station | The station pages we checked accept walk-ins for knowledge and vision tests |
| Deputy registrar license agency (DR) | Only at select agencies | Every agency sells the TIPIC after you pass, but not every one gives the test. Call first |
| Online at home | Yes | Computer or laptop with a webcam. Ages 15 and a half to under 19 need a supervising adult |
The BMV's driver license page says the test is given in person at select deputy registrar locations or any driver exam station. The Local Office map uses short codes: DX for driver exam stations, DR for deputy registrar license agencies, plus BMV Express kiosks, limited authority deputy registrars, CDL skills testing sites and county title offices. For a temps test, look for DX.
How to find the nearest testing location
- Open the Local Office finder on publicsafety.ohio.gov and search by your location.
- Pick a location marked DX (driver exam station).
- Open that station's page to check its hours and services before you drive there.
- If you would rather test at a deputy registrar, call the agency to ask whether it gives knowledge tests.
- Arrive well before closing so you have time for the vision screening and the 40 questions.
Most people searching for Ohio BMV written test locations really need a DX. Deputy registrars sell the permit card, but only some give the test.
Examples from the official list
Here are a few driver exam stations from the official Local Office pages, with the hours they listed when we checked in October 2026. Always confirm on the station's page before you go.

| Cuyahoga County DX Mayfield Heights | 6420 Mayfield Road, Mayfield Heights, OH 44124 | Tue to Fri 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Sat 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. |

Each of those pages says the station accepts walk-ins for knowledge and vision tests, while in-car driving and maneuverability tests are by appointment only. Monday hours were not listed on any of them.

What to bring to an Ohio BMV written test location
- Proof of your full legal name, date of birth and Social Security number, if you have one. The BMV's Acceptable Documents page lists what counts.
- Glasses or contacts if you need them, since you take a vision screening.
- A parent or guardian if you are under 18 and plan to buy your TIPIC the same day. They co-sign and show their own license or ID.
Testing online instead
If getting to a station is hard, the online test may be easier. You take it through Ohio BMV Online Services on a computer or laptop with a working webcam. Applicants from 15 and a half to under 19 need a supervising adult, who must also pass identity verification. Some people must test in person, including anyone with a suspended license, a medical flag, an active out-of-state license, a need for special assistance, or a motorcycle, moped or CDL test.
If identity verification fails or you see a Suspicious Activity message, the BMV says you must test in person. For a suspicious activity message, wait at least one calendar day.
After you pass: buy your temps
Passing the test does not hand you a permit. Within 60 days, visit any deputy registrar license agency to buy your Temporary Instruction Permit Identification Card (TIPIC). Bring proof of name, date of birth, Social Security number, Ohio residency and citizenship or legal presence. You give up any Ohio ID card you hold, and a responsible adult co-signs if you are under 18. The BMV fee list shows $26.50 for an operator temporary permit, including the deputy registrar fee.
If you need an accommodation for a disability, the BMV asks you to contact its ADA request team before your test date, since same-day requests may not be possible. The contact is listed on the driver license page at bmv.ohio.gov.
