NJ Permit Test Appointment: How to Book at the MVC

NJ permit test appointment guide: which MVC appointment to book, the $10 examination permit, what to bring, and teen driving school path. Book it right.

You book an NJ permit test appointment online through the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) appointment system, linked from nj.gov/mvc, and nowhere else. Most first-time drivers need two appointments: an Initial Permit appointment to buy the $10 examination permit, then a Knowledge Test appointment. Teens starting at 16 in the driving school path usually skip both, because they take the knowledge test at the school. We have run US Driving School in Hamilton, New Jersey since 2008, and this is how we walk families through it.

Which path are you on?

Before you open the scheduler, figure out your path. It decides whether you need an MVC appointment at all.

The MVC's young adult page says a 16-year-old in the special learner's permit path completes form BA-412D, brings documents to the driving school, and takes the knowledge and vision tests there. If you fail, the MVC says you can retest in 7 days.

How to book an NJ MVC permit test appointment

For the testing center path, the MVC says to visit a driver testing center with your 6 Points of ID and purchase an examination permit, then make an appointment for your knowledge test after that purchase. In the MVC scheduler, those are two separate appointment types.

  1. Go to nj.gov/mvc and follow the link to the appointment system. The MVC says you can only get an appointment by going online, and warns not to pay anyone to help you get one.
  2. Choose INITIAL PERMIT (BEFORE KNOWLEDGE TEST). This covers a first auto (Class D) permit. It does not cover the special learner's permit, which goes through a driving school.
  3. Pick a driver testing center, date and time, and enter your own email and phone number. The MVC cancels bookings made with an invalid email or phone number.
  4. At that visit, show 6 Points of ID and buy the examination permit. The MVC fee list shows $10.
  5. Back in the scheduler, choose KNOWLEDGE TEST (NOT CDL). The MVC says this appointment requires an initial permit.
  6. Show up, pass the vision test and the knowledge test, and keep your paperwork together for the road test later.
Good to know

Each person needs their own booking. The MVC's terms say duplicate bookings will be canceled, so do not reserve extra slots just in case.

NJ permit test schedule: when slots open and how to get one

The MVC does not publish a fixed release time for new appointments, so we cannot tell you a best hour to look. What helps in practice:

  • Check several driver testing centers, not just the closest one. A short drive can save weeks.
  • Look a few weeks ahead rather than only at this week.
  • Have your 6 Points of ID ready before you book, so you can take the first open slot with confidence.
  • If you cannot make it, cancel. The MVC says missing a visit without canceling could affect your ability to schedule future visits.

If you need an interpreter, ask for one when you book your permit appointment. The MVC says it arranges and pays for the interpreter, and those appointments are typically scheduled within four to six weeks.

New Jersey motor vehicle written test appointment: what to bring

  • 6 Points of ID. Use the MVC's document checker at nj.gov/mvc to make sure your documents add up.
  • Proof that you bought your examination permit, for the knowledge test appointment.
  • Your appointment confirmation, printed or on your phone.
  • Glasses or contacts if you need them for the vision test.

The written test is offered in about 13 languages, including English, Spanish, Chinese (Mandarin) and Hindi. Oral tests are English and Spanish only.

If you are 16: testing through a driving school

For teens in the special learner's permit path, the driving school handles the knowledge test as part of enrollment in behind-the-wheel training. That means no MVC knowledge test appointment, and the 6-hour behind-the-wheel requirement starts at the same school. Ask any school you are considering how and when it gives the knowledge test, and what to bring.

US Driving School, the Hamilton driving school behind DMVZone, works with teens and adults on this path, from behind-the-wheel training to road test preparation. Check usdrivingschool.com for current testing options and lesson times.

After the knowledge test

  1. Pass the knowledge and vision testsYour examination permit or special learner's permit is validated.
  2. Supervised drivingSix months if you are under 21, or three months if you are 21 or older, with an adult supervising driver who is at least 21 and has 3 years of experience.
  3. Log practice hoursDrivers under 21 need at least 50 hours, including 10 in darkness, on form BA-CSD.
  4. Book the road testUse the Auto Road Test appointment type. If you fail, the MVC says you can retest in 14 days.
