Here is a free Michigan permit test questions and answers PDF: 30 original practice questions with an answer key and a one-page table of the numbers Michigan drivers need to know. No email, no sign-up. Just download and print. Our instructors wrote every question from What Every Driver Must Know, the official manual from the Michigan Secretary of State (SOS). They are practice questions, not the real test questions, which the state does not publish.
What is in the PDF
- A numbers table: school bus, railroad, parking, passing, speed, headlights, alcohol and teen limits.
- 30 multiple-choice questions in the style of the Michigan knowledge test.
- An answer key that explains each answer in one line.
- Plain pages with no color needed, so they print cleanly at home or at a library.
Which Michigan test are you taking?
Michigan has two different permit tests, and the right one depends on your age:
| Teens (under 18) | Adults (18 and older) | |
|---|---|---|
| Test | Segment 1 state exam, inside driver education | SOS knowledge test plus a road sign test |
| Questions | 80, generated from a state pool | Not published by the SOS |
| Pass mark | At least 70% | Not published by the SOS |
| Where | Your driver education classroom | An SOS office (free) or online ($6.50) |
| What you get | Segment 1 certificate, then a Level 1 Learner's License | A Temporary Instruction Permit (TIP), $25 |
The 80-question figure comes from the Michigan Department of State Driver Education Curriculum Guide, which says the system builds a unique 80-question test for each Segment 1 student from a pool of about 320 questions. For adults, the SOS says the test has a multiple-choice section and a road sign section, but it does not post a question count or passing score.

Michigan numbers people forget
| Rule | Number |
|---|---|
| Stop for a school bus with red lights flashing | At least 20 feet back |
| Stop for a train | 15 to 50 feet from the tracks |
| No parking near a fire hydrant | 15 feet |

Michigan's fire hydrant distance is 15 feet and the school bus distance is 20 feet. Many students mix those two up, so learn them as a pair.
A simple Michigan permit test study guide
- Download What Every Driver Must Know from michigan.gov/sos and read one chapter a day.
- Take the PDF with no notes. Mark every question you were unsure about, even the ones you got right.
- Grade it and reread the manual section behind each miss and each guess.
- Study road signs by shape and color. Adults take a separate sign section, and teens see signs on the Segment 1 exam too.
- Take DMVZone's free Michigan practice test for new questions, then retake the PDF. Aim for 27 of 30 or better.
Are these the real Michigan test questions?
No, and be careful with any site that says it has them. The Segment 1 exam is built from a state question pool that driver education providers access through a secure system, and the SOS does not publish its adult test. Our questions cover the same rules from the same manual, which is what actually gets you a pass.
After you pass
- Teens: take your Segment 1 certificate to an SOS office with a parent or guardian for a Level 1 Learner's License ($25). Log 50 hours, 10 at night, and hold Level 1 at least six months.
- Adults: pay $25 for a TIP, which is valid 180 days. Practice at least 30 days with a licensed adult before the driving skills test.
