Four cars at an intersection with a stop sign on each approach, with white stop lines painted on the pavement in front of the cars.

The NC permit test is really two tests from the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles (NCDMV): a written knowledge test, where you need 80% to pass, and a separate road signs test, where you must identify 9 of 12 signs. NCDMV does not publish how many questions are on the knowledge test. Practice sites commonly say 25, which would mean 20 correct answers, but treat that number as unofficial.

How many questions are on the North Carolina permit test?

NCDMV does not publish a question count for the knowledge test. Its Driver License Tests page and the North Carolina Driver Handbook describe what the test covers, not how long it is. Many practice sites say 25 questions. If that is right, the 80% pass mark means you can miss 5 and still pass.

The signs test is scored on its own. North Carolina's administrative rule says applicants for a regular Class C license must correctly identify nine of twelve road signs, so you can miss 3. Ask the examiner at your office if you want the exact number of knowledge questions on the day.

What's on the NC permit test

The knowledge test covers traffic laws and safe driving practices from the North Carolina Driver Handbook. The part that surprises people is the road signs test.

The separate North Carolina road signs test

NCDMV says the signs test covers regulatory and warning signs, and you identify each sign by its color and shape and explain what it means. That is harder than picking a meaning from a list, because you have to recall it yourself. Drivers who skim the sign chapter are the ones who get caught here.

  • Regulatory signs: stop, yield, do not enter, wrong way, speed limits and lane controls.
  • Warning signs: curves, merges, crossings, signals ahead and school zones.
  • Shapes and colors: an octagon is always stop, a triangle is always yield, and a yellow diamond is a warning.

Knowledge test topics

  • Right of way, turning, passing and speed rules.
  • Alcohol and drugs: a driver under 21 convicted of driving with any amount of alcohol or drugs in their body loses their license for one year.
  • Phones: drivers under 18 may not use a cell phone while the vehicle is moving, except to call 911 in an emergency.
  • Points and penalties, such as following too closely.

How to study for the North Carolina permit test

  1. Read the North Carolina Driver Handbook one chapter at a time.
  2. Study road signs first. Cover the words and say each sign's meaning from its shape and color.
  3. Write down every number you see (hours, ages, fines) on one page.
  4. Take NC permit test practice quizzes and explain each wrong answer out loud.
  5. Redo the topics you miss until you score well above 80%, then rest the night before.

What to bring and how to book

Teens can get a Level 1 Limited Learner Permit from age 15 to 17. NCDMV's Level 1 checklist asks for:

  • One document proving your identity and date of birth.
  • Your Social Security card or one document proving your Social Security number.
  • One document proving North Carolina residency (two if you want an NC REAL ID).
  • Your Driver's Education Certificate from your driver education school. The course is 30 hours of classroom work and at least 6 hours behind the wheel.
  • A parent or guardian, who must be present for the tests.
  • $25.50 for the permit.
Good to know

North Carolina ended the Driving Eligibility Certificate requirement for teen drivers effective Oct. 1, 2026. Older checklists may still list it, so check NCDMV's Teen Drivers page if you are unsure.

You can book an appointment through NCDMV's scheduler at skiptheline.ncdot.gov up to seven days ahead. You must confirm by text or email within 15 minutes or the slot is released. NCDMV also says every driver license office serves walk-in customers, and texts you when there is room in the lobby. Your permit arrives by mail within about 20 business days, and you get a temporary certificate to use until then.

Can you take the North Carolina permit test online?

No. NCDMV gives the knowledge, signs and vision tests in person at a driver license office, with a parent or guardian present for teens. Online practice is the best way to prepare, but the real test happens at the office.

What happens if you fail

NCDMV says applicants who fail the knowledge test may retake it in seven calendar days. NCDMV does not publish a limit on attempts. Use the week to study the exact topics you missed, especially signs if you missed more than three.

After you pass

  • For the first six months you may drive only between 5 a.m. and 9 p.m., always with a supervising driver.
  • Your supervising driver must have been licensed for at least five years and sit next to you.
  • Only you and the supervising driver may ride in the front seat.
  • No mobile phone use while driving, except to call 911 in an emergency.
