You do not need a Georgia permit test appointment for your first try. The Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS) gives the knowledge exam on a walk-in basis at its Customer Service Centers, and its FAQ says no reservation is needed. You do need an appointment for a retest, and DDS says every retest requires one. Before any visit, submit the Online License/ID/Permit Form at dds.georgia.gov.

Good to know

Get there early. DDS says you must be seated at the testing computer at least 30 minutes before closing for a regular knowledge exam.

DDS permit test appointment for a retest

If you fail, DDS sets these waits before you can test again:

  • After a first failure: wait 1 day.
  • After a second failure: wait 7 days.
  • Every retest needs an appointment.
  • You pay the permit fee again before each attempt. DDS takes cash or credit or debit cards only, with no checks, money orders or refunds.

DDS says many services can be handled through its Online Services or the DDS 2 GO mobile app. The DDS pages we checked do not spell out exactly where to book a knowledge retest, so if you cannot find the option online, ask the examiner before you leave the center.

Before you go: the online form

DDS says all customers must submit the Online License/ID/Permit Form before visiting a center. Your information stays on file for 60 days, so fill it in close to the day you plan to test. After 60 days you submit it again.

What to bring to the Georgia permit test

The DDS learner's permit page lists these for a Class CP instructional permit:

  • You must be at least 15.
  • One proof of identity, such as a U.S. birth certificate or passport, showing your first and last name.
  • Your Social Security number on the online form. Bring proof in case it does not verify.
  • Two proofs of Georgia residency from separate sources or separate accounts.
  • If you are under 18: the Certificate of School Enrollment (DDS-1), a recent transcript, progress report, current school ID or another valid school document.
  • If you are under 18: a parent or guardian, responsible adult, or authorized driver training instructor, who signs the form.
  • The $10 permit fee, paid before the test begins.
  • Any out-of-state license, permit or ID card, which you surrender.

DDS says all documents must be in English. You also take a vision exam at the visit.

What the test looks like

The knowledge exam has two sections, Road Rules and Road Signs, and DDS requires a minimum score of 15 out of 20 on each. They are scored separately, so a strong signs score cannot make up for weak rules. DDS lists 26 languages for both sections, from Albanian to Yoruba, and offers an oral test at Customer Service Centers for people with reading disabilities.

Testing rules are strict. DDS says you may not bring pens, paper or other items into the testing area, phones and wireless devices are not allowed, and you may not speak to anyone but the examiner. Any violation counts as misconduct, and the session is scored as a failure.
