Yes, if you are 15 to 17: the Wisconsin DMV lets teens take the Wisconsin permit test online at home through its vendor KnowTo Drive, for $10 per attempt, with a parent or guardian supervising. Adults 18 and older cannot test online and take the knowledge test free at a DMV customer service center. Passing online gets you a certificate, not a permit. You still visit a DMV center to have the test validated and get your instruction permit.

Can you take the Wisconsin permit test online?

  • Age: 15 to 17. WisDOT launched the online knowledge test for this age group in March 2025.
  • Driver education: WisDOT says you must have completed the classroom part of driver education, and your driving school must notify the DMV. Check with your school before you register.
  • Parent or guardian: must be at least 21, a Wisconsin resident, help with registration and payment, and supervise the test without interfering.
  • Adults 18 and older: in person only. People searching for a "Wisconsin DMV written test online for adults" will find only practice tests online.

The online test has the same look and feel as the office test, according to WisDOT. You still need 80% on both parts: 40 of 50 on the knowledge test and 12 of 15 on the road signs test.

How the online test works

  1. Go to knowtodrive.com/wisconsin (WisDOT's link is wisconsindmv.gov/test) and register with your parent or guardian. A registration is good for 72 hours.
  2. Answer identity verification questions and pay $10 by credit or PIN-less debit card. The fee goes to the vendor, not the DMV, and is not refunded if you fail.
  3. Use a laptop or desktop with a working webcam, keyboard and mouse, and a reliable internet connection. Phones and tablets are not supported.
  4. Take a clear control photo of your face before the test. The system takes random photos while you test.
  5. Finish the two-part test, rules of the road and road signs, in English or Spanish. You have up to 120 minutes.
  6. If you pass, a completion certificate is emailed to you.

Rules that get people failed

WisDOT's online test question-and-answer sheet (form BDS348) and the KnowTo Drive FAQ list these as infractions or automatic failures:

  • Using a phone or similar device. It can mean automatic failure, so put devices away from the testing area.
  • Another person showing up on camera, or anything blocking the webcam.
  • No clear photo of your face, for example in a dark room.
  • Moving the mouse cursor outside the red border of the test window.
  • Leaving the test at any time.
  • Notes, handbooks or help from anyone, including the supervising adult.
  • Long computer inactivity.

Several infractions together mean automatic failure, and an automatic failure still counts as one of your attempts. The DMV may also ask anyone who tested online to retest in the office.

Retakes

Each knowledge test may be attempted five times in 12 months, and no more than two of those attempts can be online. You get one online attempt per day, and each retake costs another $10. After two online tries, you test in person.

What to do after you pass

  • Print the completion certificate from your email.
  • Take it, with your other documents, to a DMV customer service center. WisDOT recommends booking an appointment and says the visit takes about 15 minutes.
  • Bring your MV3001 application signed by your driver education instructor, proof of identity, name and date of birth, legal status, and your Social Security number.
  • Pay $35 for the Class D instruction permit, valid for 18 months.
  • Hold the permit at least six months, with no traffic tickets, and log 50 hours of driving, 10 at night, before your probationary license.
