Yes. The Nevada DMV offers its written knowledge test at home through KnowTo Drive Nevada, so the Nevada permit test online is open to Nevada residents at least 15 and a half years old. If you are under 18, a parent or guardian age 21 or older registers with you, and results go to the DMV automatically.

Can you take the Nevada permit test online?

Yes. The Nevada DMV (dmv.nv.gov) recommends the online test for instruction permit and Class C license applicants. The KnowTo Drive Nevada FAQ sets these rules:

  • Age and residency: any Nevada resident who is at least 15 and a half.
  • Under 18: a parent or guardian must register with you. That adult must be a Nevada resident and at least 21.
  • Language: English or Spanish.
  • Same-day rule: the DMV says you cannot take the test online and then repeat it in person at an office on the same day.

How many questions are on the Nevada permit test online?

The Nevada permit test has 25 multiple-choice questions, online or in an office. You need 80 percent, which is 20 correct. The DMV says the test stops once you reach 20 correct answers or six incorrect ones, so you may not see all 25.

What it costs

Testing online has two charges. KnowTo Drive collects $6.75 per online attempt. The DMV also charges a $25 testing fee, which it collects when you come in for your permit, and $10 for each retest. Confirm current fees at dmv.nv.gov before you go.

Rules that get people failed

KnowTo Drive monitors you and your surroundings through the webcam to prevent cheating. Its FAQ lists what gets a test disqualified:

  • Your mouse cursor leaves the red border around the test session.
  • Photos taken during the test do not match your first photo.
  • A photo shows another person. You must be alone in view of the camera.

Make sure only the test site can use your webcam, clean the lens and use good light with no glare. Your parent or guardian helps with registration, then leaves the camera view.

In our experience with nervous new drivers, the trouble is usually small: someone walks into the room, a phone on the desk pulls your eyes away, or you drag the mouse off the test window. Clear the desk and close the door.

Retakes

You can take the online test once per day and as many times as you need. After a failed attempt you can retest the next day. After a disqualification you must wait 24 hours.

What to do after you pass

Your passing result goes to the DMV automatically and is valid for one year. Next, get your instruction permit at a DMV office. Bring the documents the DMV lists for teens on its website and money for the $25 testing fee and the permit. A parent or guardian should come with you if you are under 18. Most first-time drivers under 18 must also complete driver education before the road test.
