South Carolina calls its first license a beginner's permit, and you can apply at age 15. Rules and fees change, so as of 2026 treat this guide as a starting point and confirm everything with the official agency, the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles (dmv.sc.gov).
Age and the tests
The minimum age for the beginner's permit is 15. Teens go through a vision screening and a knowledge test, and you should read the SCDMV driver's manual before you go. DMVZone does not list a question count or passing score here because you should take those from the official SCDMV pages, which can change.
Teens also need a Certification of School Attendance form (SCDMV Form PDLA) from an authorized issuer, so ask your school about it early instead of on the morning of your appointment.
Driver education and practice hours
- Driver's education in South Carolina is eight hours in the classroom and six hours of driving.
- You also need at least 40 hours of practice driving, and 10 of those hours must be at night.
- You must hold the beginner's permit for more than 180 days before you can get a license.
- You must practice with a qualified, licensed individual.
The 40-hour number is a big one. Write each drive in a log: date, length, day or night, and what you worked on. A log is far easier to keep as you go than to rebuild later.
The conditional license at 15 1/2
South Carolina lets teens who meet the requirements move up to a conditional license from age 15 1/2 to under 16. The restrictions stay for one year or until age 17. The key limits are about when and with whom you drive.
- Driving alone is allowed from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., or to 8 p.m. during daylight saving time.
- With a licensed adult age 21 or older, you may drive from the end of that window until midnight.
- From midnight to 6 a.m., you need a qualified individual with you.
- You cannot carry more than two passengers under age 21 unless a licensed adult 21 or older is in the car. Transporting family members or students to and from school is an exception.
Two numbers trip people up: the two-passenger limit applies to passengers under 21, and the evening cutoff moves two hours later during daylight saving time. Put both on your cheat sheet.
How to prepare
- Read the manual in short sessions, one chapter per sitting, and highlight every number.
- Learn signs by shape and color first, then by meaning.
- Take practice tests and say out loud why each wrong answer is wrong.
- Re-do the topics you miss, such as right of way and passing rules.
- Ask a parent to quiz you on the conditional license curfew times.
Parents can help by planning a mix of daytime, evening and night drives. Start in empty lots, then move to quiet streets before busier roads.
What to bring
Document lists change and depend on your situation, so check the SCDMV site for the current list before you go. Plan to bring your proof documents, the school attendance form and a parent or guardian if required. Arrive early and take a few slow breaths before the test.
DMVZone practice questions are for study only. They are not the real test questions, but they help you practice the topics the test covers.
