The New Jersey permit written test, which the Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) calls the knowledge test, checks that you know road signs, traffic laws and safe driving habits before you drive with a permit. You can pass it with a few weeks of steady study, and this guide explains how it works and how to get ready.
Who takes the New Jersey knowledge test?
Anyone applying for a first New Jersey license takes a knowledge test. The MVC says the minimum age for the special learner's permit is 16, and that teens in this path are enrolled in behind-the-wheel driver training with a school.
For teens, the MVC page for first-time drivers says you take your knowledge test at the driving school, and you also take a vision test. Applicants who go through an MVC driver testing center take the test there instead. Which path fits you depends on your age and situation, so read the first driver license page on nj.gov/mvc before you plan.
What the test covers
The exam is based on the official New Jersey driver manual. Expect questions from these areas:
- Road signs, signals and pavement markings
- Right of way at intersections, crosswalks and roundabouts
- Speed limits, following distance and passing
- Parking rules and stopping rules
- Sharing the road with bicycles, pedestrians and school buses
- Alcohol, drugs and distracted driving
- Rules for new drivers, such as supervised practice and curfews
The MVC does not list the number of questions or the passing score on the pages we reviewed. Check the current format in the manual and on the official site so you are not surprised on test day.
Languages and extra help
The MVC says its knowledge test is offered in English, Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), French, Spanish, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Japanese, Hindi, Albanian and Turkish. Oral tests are available in English and Spanish only. If you need an interpreter or have a hearing disability, the MVC explains how to request help on its knowledge test page.
What to bring
The MVC tells applicants to bring 6 Points of ID. Testing center applicants also bring proof that they purchased an examination permit and book their test through the MVC appointment system. Our separate guide on scheduling explains that step.
Study the driver manual in short sessions of 20 to 30 minutes. Reading a little every day works better than one long night before the test.
After you pass: what comes next
The MVC says new drivers in the teen path must practice with a supervising driver for a minimum of 50 hours, including 10 hours in darkness. The supervising driver must be at least 21 years old and sit in the front seat. Only one additional passenger is allowed unless a parent or guardian is in the car, and you cannot use cell phones or other interactive wireless devices while driving.
The MVC also says you practice for 6 months after you pass the knowledge test before you make an appointment for your road test. After that, probationary drivers practice unsupervised driving for 1 year, with no driving between 11:01 pm and 5:00 am.
A simple study plan
- Read the New Jersey driver manual one chapter at a time and write down anything surprising.
- Learn road signs by shape and color first, then by meaning.
- Take practice tests and review every wrong answer until you can explain it.
- Repeat the topics you miss, such as right of way or parking distances.
- The night before, sleep well and gather your documents.
Test day habits that help
- Read every question twice before you choose.
- Look for words like always, never or except.
- If two answers look right, pick the safest choice.
- Do not rush. Use your full time.
If you do not pass, do not panic. Many people need a second try. Check the MVC for the current retake rules and any fees, then study the areas you missed. Rules and fees change, so as of 2026 treat this guide as a starting point and confirm everything on the official site. Official source: New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission, nj.gov/mvc.
DMVZone practice questions are for study only. They are not the real test questions, but they help you practice the kinds of topics you will see.
