Where to take the road test near Washington

The MVC road testing list has 15 centers. The ones closest to Washington (Warren County) are:

  • Randolph: 160 Canfield Avenue, Randolph, NJ 07869

Road test centers are open 8 am to 5 pm, Monday to Friday, by appointment only. Book online or at a driver testing center, and go to the address on your appointment confirmation.

What the MVC has in Washington

Washington has two MVC addresses, and neither gives road tests. The licensing and vehicle center is at 404 E Washington Ave, Washington, NJ 07882. The inspection station is on Route 31 (the MVC inspection list gives 108 Rt. 31, Pershing Ave) and is appointment only.

You can get your permit and other licensing services at the Washington licensing center. Randolph is the road test center on the MVC list closest to Warren County; the others are farther away.

What to bring to the road test

  • Your valid examination permit and the 6 Points of ID used for it
  • An accompanying New Jersey licensed driver who is 21 or older and has held a New Jersey license for 3 or more years
  • A registered car with a current inspection sticker, insurance card and plate decals (red, reflective decals if you are under 21)

The examiner must be able to reach the emergency brake from the passenger seat. The MVC turns away cars with an improper, expired or missing inspection sticker, tinted windows or missing decals, and self-parking cars. The test takes about 10 to 15 minutes and checks reversing, stopping at signs, corners and intersections, smooth stopping, steering, turning around, parallel parking and yielding.

Before the test, the MVC requires supervised practice: 6 months for GDL drivers under 21, 3 months for GDL drivers 21 and over, and 20 days for non-GDL drivers. If you do not pass, you must wait at least 14 days to test again.
