Alaska Instruction Permit Test: Age, Hours and How to Pass

October 7, 2026 · 3 min read

In Alaska you can apply for an instruction permit when you turn 14. As of 2026 this guide is a starting point only, so confirm every detail with the Alaska Division of Motor Vehicles at dmv.alaska.gov and study from the official Alaska driver manual.

Age and the permit test

The Alaska DMV lists a written knowledge test and a vision test for the instruction permit. Applicants under 18 also need a parent or guardian to sign a consent form, plus proof of the relationship to the minor, such as a birth certificate or guardianship papers. We do not state how many questions the test has or what score passes, because you should check that with the DMV.

Practice hours and supervision

The DMV says a permit holder must be accompanied by a licensed driver who is at least 21 years old and has at least one year of driving experience in the type of vehicle being driven. That person must sit in the passenger seat at all times.

Many Alaska teen-driver summaries also mention a practice requirement of 40 hours, with 10 of them in challenging conditions such as darkness, snow or ice, and a permit period of about six months before the road test. These figures come from secondary sources, so ask the DMV or your driver education provider which hours apply to you before relying on them.

Alaska gives you real practice material for free: winter. Log a few drives on snowy or icy roads with your supervisor, in a safe empty lot first, and write down what you learned.

Restrictions after the permit

Young drivers in Alaska move through a graduated licensing system. Commonly reported rules include a night driving limit from 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. for teen license holders. The exact exceptions, passenger limits and ages change, so read the current graduated licensing rules on the DMV site.

How to prepare

  1. Read the Alaska driver manual in short sessions, one chapter at a time.
  2. Learn signs by shape and color, then by meaning.
  3. Pay special attention to rules that matter on long, remote roads and in winter weather.
  4. Take practice questions and say out loud why each wrong answer is wrong.
  5. Re-test your weak topics a few days later.

Alaska's long distances, wildlife and winter conditions mean the manual's sections on speed for conditions and safe following distance are worth extra time.

What to bring

The DMV lists several items for a minor's permit application. Check the current list online before you go.

DMVZone practice questions are for study only. They are not the real test questions, but they help you practice the topics the test covers.

Rules and fees change. Always confirm the details with the official Alaska DMV or motor vehicle agency before you act. DMVZone practice questions are written to teach the rules and are not copies of the real test.
